Let’s just be super clear at this point.

If you vote for Trump/Vance then you are okay with women bleeding out in parking lots and dying from sepsis, even if the only thing they were trying to do is have a baby.

And you are okay with rampant racism, which is where we’re at. It’s not just the danger and mayhem they’ve caused in Springfield, it’s Rich Lowry using the N-word and going unchecked, it’s the candidate himself flying around and cozying up to a white nationalist, it’s Senator Kennedy telling Maya Berry that she should hide her head in a bag at a hearing that was about domestic hate crimes.

You’re okay with all of that, and not just okay with it, you support it.

If you’re going to vote for these people who hate women and hate BIPOC and hate the LGBTQ community and make it clear every day, then those are your values.

Just fucking own it.

You’re also okay with constant school shootings, climate crisis denial, and infrastructure inequities.

You cannot have it both ways.

Go ahead and vote for this kind of world if that’s what you want to see, but don’t tell yourself you aren’t supporting all that. You are. That’s who you’re deciding to be and that’s what you’re perpetuating.

At the very least, you should be able to say out loud: yes, I support women not having equal access to lifesaving healthcare even when they’re dying, and a forced birth society is what I want. I support politicians taking money from gun manufacturers because my 2nd Amendment rights are more important to me than kids being safe at school. I support racism and bigotry in all its forms. And I am in favor of plundering every last resource from this planet while I’m here.

That’s the platform of Trump/Vance: Mayhem, destruction, arrogance, violence, misogyny, racism, constant lying and gaslighting.

Our world is suffering from metastatic cancer. Stage 4. Racism has spread to nearly every part of the body politic, intersecting with bigotry of all kinds, justifying all kinds of inequities by victim blaming; heightening exploitation and misplaced hate; spurring mass shootings, arms races, and demagogues who polarize nations, shutting down essential organs of democracy; and threatening the life of human society with nuclear war and climate change.

In the United States, the metastatic cancer has been spreading, contracting, and threatening to kill the American body as it nearly did before its birth, as it nearly did during its Civil War. But how many people stare inside the body of their nations' racial inequities, their neighborhoods' racial inequities, their occupations' racial inequities, their institutions' racial inequities, and flatly deny that their policies are racist? They flatly deny that racial inequity is a signpost of racist policy. They flatly deny the racist policy as they use racist ideas to justify the racial inequity. They flatly deny the cancer of racism as the cancer cells spread and literally threaten their own lives and the lives of the people and spaces and places they hold dear.

The popular conception of denial - like the popular strategy of suasion - is suicidal.

This is what actually happened to Ruby Bridges on her first day at William Franz Elementary School in New Orleans on November 14, 1960. Ruby was the first African American child to attend the school after a federal court ordered the New Orleans school system to integrate. The public outcry was so great that white parents withdrew their children from school so they would not have to sit with a Black girl. Ruby spent an entire year in a classroom by herself.

Artist and magazine illustrator Norman Rockwell is known for his idyllic images of American life in the twentieth century. But his work had a new sense of purpose in 1960s when he was hired by LOOK magazine. There, he produced his famous painting The Problem We All Live With, a visual commentary on segregation and the problem of racism in America. The painting depicts Ruby’s courageous walk to school on that November day. She dutifully follows faceless men—the yellow armbands reveal them to be federal marshals—past a wall smeared with racist graffiti and the juice of a thrown tomato. The canvas is arranged so that the viewer is at Ruby’s height, seeing the scene from her perspective.

Rockwell’s painting, created a few years after Ruby made her fateful entrance at school, was produced at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. It is now considered a symbol of that struggle. Bridges never met Rockwell, but as an adult, she came to admire his decision to tell her story: “Here was a man that had been doing lots of work, painting family images, and all of a sudden decided this is what I’m going to do…it’s wrong, and I’m going to say that it’s wrong…the mere fact that [Norman Rockwell] had enough courage to step up to the plate and say I’m going to make a statement, and he did it in a very powerful way…even though I had not had an opportunity to meet him, I commend him for that.”
