David's spiritual life has always been part of his work, and that's deepened in a way that's reflected in his work. I can't point to something and say, "Oh now he's doing this," because the change has been more subtle than that. It's like his work has gotten richer. Twin Peaks has confounded many people, but David's an artist and the work he does isn't supposed to be easy. I don't think he feels compelled to tell a story people want him to tell, and seems totally comfortable with that.

Even the ones who laugh are sometimes caught without an answer. These creatures who introduce themselves, but we swear we have met them somewhere before, yes? Look in the mirror. What do you see? Is it a dream, or a nightmare? Are we being introduced against our will? Are they mirrors? I can see the smoke. I can smell the fire. The battle is drawing nigh.

I play my part on life's stage. I tell what I can to form the perfect answer. But that answer cannot come before all are ready to hear, so I tell what I can to form the perfect answer. Sometimes my anger at the fire is evident. Sometimes it is not anger, really – it may appear as such, but could it be a clue? The fire I speak of is not a kind fire.

While David was editing [The Elephant Man], EMI edited a version without him, then called Mel [Brooks] and told him they'd cut the film to show him. Mel said, "I'm not even going to look at what you've done. We're going with David's version." The studio guys will crush you, and they were going to crush David, and Mel was an unreal advocate for him.

The first cut of the film ran for almost three hours and was edited down to a final version that's two hours and six minutes. There were lots of shots of people walking down long hallways and atmosphere stuff that ended up being cut, but most of what was shot ended up onscreen. Mel had final cut but he deferred to David on that, and he took no credit at all on the film because he didn't want his name to create any expectations about what the film was.

Desire for an idea is like bait. When you're fishing, yo0u have to have patience. You bait your hook, and then you wait. The desire is the bait that pulls those fish in - those ideas.

The beautiful things that when you catch one fish that you love, even if it's a little fish - the fragment of an idea - that fish will draw in other fish, and they'll hook onto it. Then you're on your way. Soon there are more and more fragments, and the whole thing emerges. But it starts with desire.
