TRACY CHAPMAN
"Give Me One Reason"

Give me one reason to stay here
And I'll turn right back around
Give me one reason to stay here
And I'll turn right back around
Said I don't want to leave you lonely
You got to make me change my mind

Baby I got your number
Oh and I know that you got mine
You know that I called you
I called you many times

You can call me baby
You can call me anytime, you got to call me
Give me one reason to stay here
And I'll turn right back around
(You can see me turnin')

Give me one reason to stay here
And I'll turn right back around
(You can see me turnin')
Said I don't want leave you lonely

You got to make me change my mind
I don't want no one to squeeze me
They might take away my life
I don't want no one to squeeze me

They might take away my life
I just want someone to hold me
Oh and rock me through the night
This youthful heart can love you
Yes and give you what you need
I said this youthful heart can love you

Oh and give you what you need
But I'm too old to go chasin' you around
Wastin' my precious energy
Give me one reason to stay here

Yes and I'll turn right back around
(You can see me turnin')
Give me one reason to stay here
Oh I'll turn right back around
(You can see me turnin')

Said I don't want leave you lonely
You got to make me change my mind
Baby just give me one reason
Oh give me just one reason why

Baby just give me one reason
Oh give me just one reason why I should stay
Said I told you that I loved you
And there ain't no more to say

ROY DECARAVA
Roy DeCarava: Photographs

There’s an arc of being. There’s a beginning, then the peak is reached and then there’s the end. It’s like the pole vaulter who begins his run, shoots up, then comes down. At the peak there is no movement. He’s neither going up nor going down. It is that moment I wait for.

AP:

The son of Rep. Lauren Boebert (R.-Colo) was arrested Tuesday on more than 20 criminal charges in the latest incident of ongoing Boebert family issues.

Tyler Boebert, 18, was picked up Tuesday afternoon after a string of recent vehicle trespassing incidents and property thefts in the area, according to a social media post by the Rifle Police Department.

Jail records show he faces 22 counts altogether, five of which are felonies. The charges include criminal possession of ID documents with multiple victims, conspiracy to commit a felony, first degree criminal trespassing and theft.

"This is an ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time," the Rifle police said in the post.

Tyler Boebert was still in custody as of 9:45 a.m. Mountain Time Wednesday at a $8,250 bond, Garfield County Jail records showed. Rep. Boebert acknowledged the arrest in a statement Wednesday, saying he "should be held accountable for poor decisions."

"Portrait of the Inauthentic Negro: How Prejudice Distorts the Victim’s Personality " [July 1950]

Authenticity is difficult to attain. To make it even more difficult, no one seems to know exactly what it consists in. Authenticity, as I take it, would mean stubborn adherence to one’s essential self, in spite of the distorting pressures of one’s situation. By the Negro’s essential self, I mean his innate qualities and developed characteristics as an individual, as distinguished from his preponderantly defensive reactions as a member of an embattled minority.

HEAL THE SICK

Doris and Horace were watching a faith healing program on TV. The evangelist called for all who wanted to be healed to put one hand on the TV and the other on the body pan they wanted healed.

Doris hobbled over and put one hand on the TV and the other on her arthritic hip. Horace made his way over and put one hand on the TV and the other on his crotch.

Doris looked at him with disgust. "You old coot. He said heal the sick, not raise the dead."

"Hit the Road, Jack"

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more
What you say?
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more

Old woman, old woman, don't treat me so mean
You're the meanest old woman that I've ever seen
I guess if you said so
I'll have to pack my things and go (That's right)

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more
What you say?
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more

Now baby, listen baby, don't ya treat me this way
'Cause I'll be back on my feet some day
(Don't care if you do 'cause it's understood)
(You ain't got no money, you just ain't no good)
Well, I guess if you say so
I'll have to pack my things and go (That's right)

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more
What you say?
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more

Well (Don't you come back no more)
Uh, what you say? (Don't you come back no more)
I didn't understand you (Don't you come back no more)
You can't mean that (Don't you come back no more)
Oh, now baby, please (Don't you come back no more)
What you tryin' to do to me? (Don't you come back no more)
Oh, don't treat me like that (Don't you come back no more)

OLAUDAH EQUIANO [GUSTAVUS VASSA]
The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African (1789)

It is difficult for those who publish their own memoirs to escape the imputation of vanity; nor is this the only disadvantage under which they labor: it is also their misfortune, that what is uncommon is rarely, if ever believed, and what is obvious we are apt to turn from with disgust.

People generally think those memoirs only worthy to be read or remembered which abound in great or striking events, those in short which in a high degree excite either admiration or pity: all others they consign to contempt and oblivion.

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Book III

There’s an old oak tree up in the quarters and it has seen much much, and it knows much much. And I’m not ashamed to say I have talked to it, and I’m not crazy either. It’s not necessary craziness when you talk to trees and rivers. But a different thing when you talk to ditches and bayous. A ditch ain’t nothing, and a bayou ain’t too much either. But when you talk to an oak tree that’s been here all these years, and knows more than you’ll ever know, it’s not craziness; it’s just the nobility you respect.

YUVAL NOAH HARARI
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

The capitalist and consumerist ethics are two sides of the same coin, a merger of two commandments.

The supreme commandment of the rich is ‘Invest!’ The supreme commandment of the rest of us is ‘Buy!’ The capitalist–consumerist ethic is revolutionary in another respect. Most previous ethical systems presented people with a pretty tough deal. They were promised paradise, but only if they cultivated compassion and tolerance, overcame craving and anger, and restrained their selfish interests. This was too tough for most.

The history of ethics is a sad tale of wonderful ideals that nobody can live up to. Most Christians did not imitate Christ, most Buddhists failed to follow Buddha, and most Confucians would have caused Confucius a temper tantrum. In contrast, most people today successfully live up to the capitalist–consumerist ideal. The new ethic promises paradise on condition that the rich remain greedy and spend their time making more money and that the masses give free reign to their cravings and passions and buy more and more.

This is the first religion in history whose followers actually do what they are asked to do. How though do we know that we'll really get paradise in return? We've seen it on television.
