EMIL CIORAN
In every man sleeps a prophet, and when he wakes there is a little more evil in the world.

DENISE LEVERTOV - “People At Night”
A night that cuts between you and you
and you and you and you
and me : jostles us apart, a man elbowing
through a crowd. We won’t
look for each other, either-
wander off, each alone, not looking
in the slow crowd. Among sideshows
under movie signs,
pictures made of a million lights,
giants that move and again move
again, above a cloud of thick smells,
franks, roasted nutmeats- Or going up to some apartment, yours
or yours, finding
someone sitting in the dark:
who is it really? So you switch the
light on to see: you know the name but
who is it ?
But you won’t see. The fluorescent light flickers sullenly, a
pause. But you command. It grabs
each face and holds it up
by the hair for you, mask after mask.
You and you and I repeat
gestures that make do when speech
has failed and talk
and talk, laughing, saying
‘I’, and ‘I’,
meaning ‘Anybody’.
No one.

KAY RYAN - “Crash”
Slip is one
law of crash
among dozens.
There is also
shift—
moving a
granite lozenge
to the left
a little,
sending down
a cliff.
Also toggles:
the idle flip
that trips
the rails
trains travel.
No act
or refusal
to act, no
special grip
or triple lock
or brake stops
crash: crash
quickens
on resistance
like a legal
system
out of Dickens.

WANG WEI - “Drifting on the Lake”
Autumn is crisp and the firmament far,
especially far from where people live.
I look at cranes on the sand
and am immersed in joy when I see mountains beyond the clouds.
Dusk inks the crystal ripples.
Leisurely the white moon comes out.
Tonight I am with my oar, alone, and can do
everything,
yet waver, not willing to return.

EDMUND WHITE from A Boy’s Own Story
Sex now seemed a strange thing to me, a social rite that registered, even brought about shifts in the balance of power, but something that was more discussed than performed, a simple emission of fluid that somehow generated religious, social, and economic consequences.
