"I've Got That Lovin' Bug Itch"

____________________

I've got that lovin' bug itch,

But no-one to scratch it!

Got a good ball to pitch

But no-one to catch it!

Here's the key to my heart,

Won't somebody unlatch it?

Got that lovin' bug itch!

And I've got two lovin' arms,

They're not made of plastic!

Got a wonderful urge

To do somethin' drastic!

I'm just dyin' to splurge

In a way that's fantastic!

Got that lovin' bug itch! (I got that lovin' bug itch)

There was a time that nothing ever bothered me,

And I was pretty certain I would never be hooked!

But I've been bitten by the love bug and it's plain to see

That my goose (oh me!) is cooked! (oh my!)

I've got that lovin' bug itch,

I'm a gal who's been yearning!

And my heart's within reach,

A fire is burning!

If you're willing to teach,

Then I'm ready for the learning!

Got that lovin' bug itch!

I've got that lovin' bug itch,

But no-one to scratch it!

Got a good ball to pitch

But no-one to catch it!

Here's the key to my heart,

Won't somebody unlatch it?

Got that lovin' bug itch! (I got that lovin' bug itch)

There was a time that nothing ever bothered me,

And I was pretty certain I would never be hooked!

But I've been bitten by the love bug and it's plain to see

That my goose (oh me!) is cooked! (oh my!)

I pray to heaven above

To stop me from shakin',

Got a heart full of love,

It's just about breakin'!

All I need is a shove

And I'm yours for the takin'!

Got that lovin' bug itch!

ANDRÉS ELOY BLANCO

"Angelitos negros"

____________________

Pintor nacido en mi tierra

Con el pincel extranjero

Pintor que sigues el rumbo

De tantos pintores viejos

Aunque la virgen sea blanca

Pintale angelitos negros

Que tambien se van al cielo

Todos los negritos buenos

Pintor si pintas con amor

Porque desprecias su color

Si sabes que en el cielo

Tambien ay tambien los quiere dios

Pintor si pintas con amor

Porque desprecias su color

Si sabes que en el cielo

Tambien ay tambien los quiere dios

Pintor de santos y alcobas

Si tienes alma en el cuerpo

Porque al pintar en tus cuadros

Te olvidastes de los negros

Siempre que pintas iglesias

Pintas angelitos bellos

Pero nunca te acordste

De pintar un angel negro

Un angel negro

Un angel negro un angel negro

First release by Toña la Negra in 1942

First Eartha Kitt recording in 1953

JAMES SHELTON

"Lilac Wine"

____________________

I lost myself on a cool damp night

I gave myself in that misty light

Was hypnotized by a strange delight

Under a lilac tree

I made wine from the lilac tree

Put my heart in its recipe

It makes me see what I want to see

And be what I want to be

When I think more than I want to think

Do things I never should do

I drink much more that I ought to drink

Because it brings me back you

Lilac wine is sweet and heady

Like my love

Lilac wine, I feel unsteady

Like my love

Listen to me, I cannot see clearly

Isn’t that she, coming to me, nearly here

Lilac wine is sweet and heady

Where’s my love

Lilac wine, I feel unsteady

Where’s my love

Listen to me, why is everything so hazy

Isn’t that she, or am I just going crazy, dear

Lilac wine, I feel unready for my love

Feel unready, for my love

SOME QUOTES

MARGARET ATWOOD

Stupidity is the same as evil if you judge by the results.

DOROTHY ALLISON

If it’s true, I have the absolute right to terrify you with it.

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS

I am absolutely convinced that the main source of hate in the world is religion and organized religion. Absolutely convinced of that. And I think it should be - religion - treated with ridicule, hatred, and contempt.

So when I say that I think religion poisons everything, I’m not just doing what publishers like and coming up with a provocative subtitle. I mean to say it infects us in our most basic integrity.

It says we can’t be moral without “Big Brother,” without a totalitarian permission. It means we can’t be good to one another without this. It means we must be afraid.

We must also be forced to love someone whom we fear - the essence of sado-masochism, the essence of abjection, the essence of the Master/Slave relationship. And that it knows death is coming, and can’t wait to bring it on.

I say that is Evil.

And though I do, some nights, stay home, I enjoy more the nights when I go out and fight against this ultimate wickedness and this ultimate stupidity.

JACK LONDON

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time living.

ROBERT A. HEINLEIN

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

STEPHEN BATCHELOR

It has taken four billion years of evolution to generate this kind of organism with this kind of brain, and yet we wake up in the morning and feel bored. How extraordinary it is to be here at all!

DOROTHY PARKER

Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.

URSULA K. LE GUIN

There’s no right answer to the wrong question. Now what do we do?

CARL SAGAN

I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues.

When the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites - now down to 10 seconds or less - lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.

MARGARET MEAD

It seems to me very important to continue to distinguish between two evils. It may be necessary temporarily to accept a lesser evil, but one must never label a necessary evil as good.
