RUTH PRAWER JHABVALA after E. M. FORSTER
A Room with a View
[Lucy finishes playing the pensione piano. Mr. Beebe claps.]
MR BEEBE
May I say something rather daring?
LUCY
Oh, Mr. Beebe, You sound like Miss Lavish. Don't tell me you're writing a novel, too.
MR. BEEBE
If I were, you would be my heroine. And I should write, “If Miss Honeychurch ever chooses to live as she plays, it will be very exciting. Both for us and for her.”
LUCY
Mother doesn't like me playing Beethoven. She says I'm always peevish after.
MR. BEEBE
Naturally … One would be … Stirred up. Won't you play some more?
LUCY
No, I think I'll go out.
MR. BEEBE
Alone? Is that wise, Miss Honeychurch?
LUCY
To be wise one might have stayed at home in Summer Street. I'll not go far, I promise.
